Last night saw the launch of Brenda Bannister’s The Tissue Veil, the second title to bear the Silver Crow Books logo.
“Conceived in London, delivered in Frome” is how Brenda describes her coming-of-age novel about two young women, a hundred years apart, who live in the same house in Stepney, East London. Brenda got to know the area when she worked there years before coming to Frome, and the changing fortunes of that part of London inspired her story. Emily and Aysha may be separated by a century but they are united by their struggle against the constraints of family obligation, both girls craving independence in the face of cultural expectations.
Last night’s launch at Hunting Raven Books in Frome was packed out, with plenty of questions from the audience after Brenda read two passages that showed how her main characters’ stories intertwine at a crucial point in both their lives.
Frome Writers’ Collective launched Silver Crow Books in November, with my crime novel The Shame of Innocence, and the launch of a third title is already on the horizon – watch this space!
